Program terms
Draft summary. This page explains how the program works in plain words. Each artist also signs a written agreement, which a lawyer will review before launch. Where the two differ, your signed agreement is the one that counts. Anything in [brackets] will be filled in.
We want you to feel completely at ease before you join, so here's everything in one place. If anything is unclear, please ask. We're always happy to talk it through.
1. Who can join
Artists who are 18 or older and able to sign a written agreement. We select artists for high-quality work and an engaged following.
2. Your spot
Your spot is confirmed once we've agreed in writing on your book, your four pages and your dates. Applying is never a commitment, and there's no need to film anything before that confirmation.
Each book has six artist spots, filled first come, first served. Pages are shared out in order, never hand-picked: the first artist confirmed colors the first set of four pages, the second artist the next four, and so on.
3. What you receive
- A lifetime royalty on the one book you colored your pages for, for as long as that book is sold: 5% of what Decoder Rebellion earns on each copy. Your royalty is protected: it keeps being paid even if Decoder Rebellion changes hands or outlives its founder, and it's yours to pass on to whoever you choose. It covers that book only, not the whole series.
- Series Two sponsor pay. When a brand sponsors your Series Two book, 70% of the sponsor money is shared by the artists who color with that sponsor's product, and paid when your videos are delivered.
- A free, complete product set from your Series Two sponsor, yours to keep.
- Two free books: your first Color With Me copy to color your pages in, and a second for the "This One Is for Casper" bonus set.
- A fair trade for the "This One Is for Casper" originals. After Round 2, you color four bonus originals for Casper Trenton's collection. In return, Casper signs your first Color With Me page, and you unlock the ability to sell official Decoder Rebellion merch. We exchange originals in person at our annual meetup (dates to be announced), so your work never gets lost in the mail.
- Merch featuring your page. Once merch is unlocked, the profit from merch featuring your page is split 50/50.
- Merch featuring your page: profits are shared 50/50 between you and Decoder Rebellion, as set in your agreement.
- Your own sales stay yours. Originals, auctions, live colorings, collector boxes, prints, classes and anything else you sell on your own: we never take a share.
- Your affiliate links. Commissions from links on your own page and channels are yours.
We can't promise any number of views, sales or earnings, but we'll always share how things are going.
4. The videos
- The color-along videos belong to Decoder Rebellion and are published on the Decoder Rebellion channel with our logo.
- You're welcome, and encouraged, to post them on your own channels too, as described in your agreement.
- We kindly ask that the videos stay up and unchanged for good, on our channel and on yours. Families scan into them from printed books for years, and our sponsors support the books for the life of the videos.
- From time to time we'll ask for a quick share of your video analytics, for sponsor reports.
5. Your artist page
- Each artist sets up and keeps their own domain for their artist page. We'll share our template so it's easy and matches the books.
- The QR codes printed in the books point to Decoder Rebellion links that forward to your page, so the books keep working even if your site changes.
- Your page links to your own shop. Everything there should be art-related and fit what we do: your courses, classes, originals, prints, the supplies you love, and similar creative offers. Products unrelated to art don't belong on a Decoder Rebellion artist page. Offers should be family-friendly and work as described, and affiliate or sponsored links need a short, clear label.
6. The sponsored round
In Series Two, you'll color with your sponsor's real product, and your videos will be marked as a paid promotion, as YouTube and the law require. Your artist page will show "Brought to you by" your sponsor. Nothing is ever edited into your videos.
7. Payments
Payments come from Pranachi Referrals L.L.C., doing business as Decoder Rebellion. Your sponsor share is paid when your videos are delivered. Your royalty is earned on every copy sold, online, in stores and in bulk orders, and paid on a regular schedule with a statement. Artists are independent contractors, so you may receive a tax form (such as a 1099) for what you're paid. [Payment method and royalty schedule.]
8. Dates and life
We ask for pages that are fully colored, carefully finished and at least as polished as the work you showed us when you applied. Your coloring should match or go beyond our colored covers, built up in layers for depth and smooth blends, with your techniques shown clearly on camera so viewers can learn from you. Print dates are fixed, so delivery dates matter too. If life gets in the way, just tell us as early as you can and we'll look for a way through together. If the timing can't work, your spot can move to a future book, and you're always welcome back.
9. Stepping back
You can choose not to join future rounds at any time. Because every book depends on all six artists, we only publish complete sets. If any of your four pages is incomplete or missing at the deadline, your agreement for that round is set aside: your pages from that round aren't published, no pay is earned for it, and your set goes to the next artist in line. The same happens if we can't reach you after two check-ins over 14 days while we're getting ready to film. If a sponsor kit was already sent, we'll kindly ask you to return it or cover its retail value. Royalties are earned by completed work: all four videos, with every page colored well. Only high-quality pages are published. If the coloring falls short of the standard above, those pages won't be published or earn a royalty, and we won't be inviting you to future rounds. Deliberately damaging materials, making a mockery of our pages, or knowingly turning in work far below what you showed us when you applied would mean a permanent goodbye from Decoder Rebellion, with nothing from that round published or paid. We trust it will never come to that. Your place in the program may also end if deadlines are missed without good reason. We'll always tell you in writing, and your 5% royalty on any book already published with your completed pages from an earlier round keeps being paid for as long as it sells. Please keep your contact and payment details current, so your royalty always reaches you. Videos you've already delivered stay up, as your agreement describes, and books that are already printed can't be recalled.
10. The books
Decoder Rebellion keeps final say over the books themselves. Your voice in your videos is always your own. We'll never script you.
11. Color-Offs and giveaways
Any Color-Off or giveaway will have its own official rules, shared before anyone enters.
12. Your shop is yours
Your shop, courses and offers are your own business, so their sales, refunds, chargebacks, shipping and any customer disputes are yours to handle. We look after anything bought directly from Decoder Rebellion, like the books and our own merch store.
13. A collaboration, not a job
This is a community of artists, peers making side money together and growing our own brands. Nobody punches a clock: you set your own hours as an independent contractor. That also means there are no employee benefits, such as health plans, a 401(k) or paid time off.
14. Your information
We never sell your personal information to anyone. Our privacy notice explains what we share and why.
15. Guidelines that grow with us
Alongside your agreement, we keep a set of participant guidelines for the day-to-day: filming tips, the quality standard, the page template, shop rules, meetups and community conduct. As the program grows we may update them, and we'll always give you at least 14 days' notice by email or a posted note. Guidelines can never lower your pay or change what you own. Those promises live in your signed agreement, which only changes if we both sign.
